Burnham Travels to New York for First Major Test of Diplomacy
Burnham departed from Stansted Airport on his way to the United Nations General Assembly, where he is scheduled to meet Trump face-to-face on Tuesday. The talks are expected to focus heavily on the war in Ukraine and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Although the two politicians have previously exchanged strong criticism over policy, they are now working toward developing a more practical relationship and identifying areas where they can cooperate.
Burnham's earlier position toward Trump was notably different. In 2017, while serving as Mayor of Greater Manchester, he said the US president would not be welcome in the city. In 2019, he went further, saying he would decline to meet Trump if the president traveled there.
He has also remained critical of Trump in recent years. While campaigning in Makerfield this month, Burnham characterized US politics as “polarized” and “poisonous.”
Following the storming of the US Capitol in 2021, Burnham wrote on X: “Any UK politician who gave Trump the time of day should be ashamed right now.”
Since taking office as prime minister in July, however, Burnham has placed greater emphasis on finding areas of cooperation with political rivals. He has said that he consistently seeks to establish “common ground.”
